‘Complete the Square’– how do I do that?

I need some help with my math homework:

The problem reads:

Solve by completing the square. x(squared)-10x+1=0

How do I solve that? Am I supposed to know this by the first day of Geometry, my algebra 2 friends don’t know it…..

Thanx everyone, it’s much appreciated!

x^2 – 10x + 1 = 0

=> (x^2 – 10x) + 1 = 0

Now complete the square…

=> (x^2 – 10x + 25 – 25) + 1 = 0

=> (x^2 – 10x + 25) – 25 + 1 = 0

(x^2 – 10x + 25) reduces to: (x – 5)^2…

=> (x – 5)^2 – 24 = 0

=> (x – 5)^2 = 24

=> x – 5 = +/- √24

=> x – 5 = +/- 2√6

=> x = 5 +/- 2√6

Therefore, x = 5 + 2√6 or 5 – 2√6.

follow the order of operations and it’ll all even out.

1. x (sq)- 10x + 1 =

2x – 10x + 1 + =

-8x + 1 – 1= 0 – 1

-8x = -1

-8 + 8 x = -1 + 8

x = 7

there you go! simple right?

Good Luck w/ Geometry!!!
