Characters from works of literature who are conflicted?
Does anyone know any characters whose mind is pulled into conflicting directions by two compelling desires, etc? I can only think of Arthur Dimmesdale from The Scarlet Letter.

The most famous “conflicted” character in literature is probably Shakespeare’s Hamlet. On the one hand, he feels a duty to avenge the murder of his father. On the other hand, he wishes he didn’t have to deal with it. (“The time is out of joint. O cursed spite, that ever I was born to set it right!”)
All literature involves conflict. When we say that a character is “conflicted”, we are referring to one of the four main types of conflict: man against himself. (The other three are: man against man, man against nature, and man against God.)
