catch me if u can 😉

can you help me with a conversion math problem?

The area of the 48 contiguous states is 3.02 x 10^6 mi^2. Assume that these states are flat (no mountains or valleys). What volume of water, in liters, would cover these states with 2 inches of rainfall?

1 mile = 1,609 meters

3.02E6 mi^2 x (1609^2m^2/mi^2) = 7.818E12 m^2

1 in= 2.54 cm => 2 in = 5.08cm = .0508m

7.818E12 m^2 x .0508m = 3.97E11 m^3

1 cubic meter = 1,000,000 cubic centimeters

3.97E11 m^3 x (1,000,000 cm^3 / m^3) = 3.97E17 cm^3

1000 cm^3 = 1L

3.97E17 cm^3 x (1L / 1000cm^3) = 3.97E14 L

or 3.97 x 10^14 L

Okay, an inch is 2.54 centemeters so 2 inches is 5.08 cm.

5.08 * 3.2 * 10 to the six will give you an anser iin m*m*cm = 100 * 100 *1 cc’s so the answer will be in 10,000 cc’s which is ten litres so multiple the two and add one order of magnitude so it should be 5.08 * 3.3 * 10 to the power of 7 litres.

Sorry missed the mi, I just thought it was square meteres, You’d have to multiplye what I suggested by some conversion facyor to get sq m from sq mi.

Better yet, petition your government to recognize the metric system and join the rest of the world.

Volume = Length x Width x Depth (average)

Volume=3.02 x 10^6mi^2 x 2in

Sorry, don’t know how to work out the rest
