The quadratic formula is:

x = [-b ± sqrt(b^2 – 4ac)] / 2a

Where:

a = 1

b = -14

c = 49

Let’s “plug and chug!”

x = [-b ± sqrt(b^2 – 4ac)] / 2a

x = [-(-14) ± sqrt((-14)^2 – 4(1)(49))] / 2(1)

x = [14 ± sqrt(196 – 196)] / 2

x = [14 ± sqrt(0)] / 2

x = [14 ± (0)] / 2

x = 14 / 2

x = 7

You could have done it an easier way, by factoring:

x^2 – 14x + 49 = (x – 7)^2

Set (x – 7) = 0

x – 7 = 0

x = 7

Good luck in your studies,
