Can you clarify for me? Would this answer be okay?

Here’s the question:

Write a word problem that could be solved by evaluating the expression 3x – 5 when x = 5

My answer :

There is a classroom full of 15 children, 5 children left to go to the bathroom. How many children are in the classroom now?

That IS a word problem, but it does not apply to the problem. The way you said it, you are not expressing the 3x part.. you are only expressing the subtracting five part. You could say that “There are three rows with five children in each. One row leaves to go to the bathroom. How many children are left remaining in the classroom when x=5?”

no you would have to say there a three rows each with five children and five left to go to the bathroom….that way you express the 3x part of the equation

It seems to me that if x=5 you would have 35-5 = 30 so 15 – 5 equaling 10 sure isnt the same.

That works as a word problem – but no teacher in his/her right mind would let five kids go to the bathroom at the same time!
