Toulmin’s theory of argument is based on his model, or layout, of argument. This model identifies six aspects of argument that are common in any field. Remember that the substance of the argument may change from one field to another (i.e., political speeches and law), however, the parts will remain the same. There are essential elements that the essay must contain

Thesis or Claim, can be direct or indirect

Support or evidence for your claim

Warrants or beliefs usually unstated

Qualifiers (many, most, some) but never (all, none etc.)

Rebuttal – the other side of the argument

Backing – Supporting the Support

Usually laid out as Issue then Category then claim then support
