Can someone help me with my math homework. You don’t have to solve it but just tell me how I would do it.

I forgot my notes at school and it’s due tomorrow. Here is the problem I am stuck on.

-1= -y over 4-6

I’m really confused on how to figure it out. I worked it out to 5=-y over 4 but I can’t get past that. I really need help.

Multiply by the reciprical, 4 on both sides y=-20

-1=20/4-6

-1=5-6

-1=-1

Ok well first of all, you did the problem wrong. So let’s start from the beggining and work out way through toward the end.

1) First let’s start out by simplifying the denominator:

4 – 6 = -2 , therefore -1 = -y/-2

2) Multiplying or Dividing two negative numbers make a positive number. So, multiply -1 on the numerator and the denominator.

-1= -y X -1/-2 X -1 which will be simplified into -1=y/2

3) The y needs to stand alone byitself to get the final answer. So we’re going to multiply 2 on both sides.

-1 X 2= y/2 X 2 which simplifys to

Y=-2 which is the answer.

*NOTE* To move an number to the other side:

Subtract to move an Addition

Add to move a Subtraction

Multiply to move a Division

Divide to move Multiplication

*TIP*: Whatever you do to one side, you HAVE to do to the other.

OK, so I don’t know if I’ll be able to explain this well but here goes nothing:

-1=-y over -2 (because you subtracted 6 from 4), then 2=-y (because you multiplied the -2 on each side to cancel out the -2 under the y on the right side and multiply it by the -1 on the left side), then y=-2 (because you can multiply each side by a negative so that the y is positive and the 2 is now negative)

Hope this helps!

-1 = -y / 4-6

-1 = -y / -2

-1 = y / 2 (a negative over a negative equals positive)

then to get the value of y, multiple y / 2 by 2 to make it plain y. so then you have to mulitply the other side by 2, which is -2.

y = -2!

-1=-y/4-6

-1=-y/-2

multiply both sides by -2. -2(-1)=-2(-y/-2)

The right becomes +2 and on the left the -2’s cancel out leaving -y.

2=-y

-2=y(got this by reversing both sides) As long as you do the same to both sides, nothing changes.

i don’t know how to explain it, but the answer would be -y over 2.
