Myths are sacred stories of diverse cultures and civilizations that make up the mythology of the world. Myth is the core element of many belief systems and religions – not only giving meaning and purpose to people’s lives, but enabling them to understand the world around them. The top ten pagan/tribal/ancient mythologies are as follows : 1) The classical world is mostly concerned with ancient Greece from around 1500 BCE until the end of the Roman period in about 500 CE. Greek myth was first recorded by Hesiod and Homer around the 8th century BCE, and later became part of Roman culture. 2) The Hindu belief system is so distinct from all belief systems simply because, according to its beliefs ‘ anything or anyone goes ‘ . Hindu myth developed from the earlier Vedic beliefs of the invading Aryans. 3) Chinese mythology is as diverse and colourful as that of India. It is composed of tales and concepts from three different belief systems. Its vast collection of deities is derived from Taoism, Confucianism and the introduction of Buddhism from India. 4) An amalgam of folk legend, Shinto and Buddhist tradfitions, Japanese myth consists of innumerable deities spirits known as Kami. Many of the gods and their stories had originally been imported from Chinese and Indian mythology around the 4th century CE when they conquered mainland Korea. 5)In ancient Egypt; myth, religion and culture walked side by side, even though the country was not isolated, it was still inward-looking. 6) Mesopotamian culture was outward-looking. The cultural protoganist of the Flood story was known as Noah in Ur, Utnapishtum in Babylon and Atrahis in Shurupak. 7) In Celtic mythology, one of the few civilizations to revolt against the Roman rule, their mythology is diverse, and fascinating in its obscurity. From about the 8th century CE, religious writers tried to rework the myths into a kind of Christian dogma, and stories such as the Holy Grail and the Arthurian legends remain powerful to his day. 8) Norse mythology remained secularized and intact in spite of widespread Christianity throughout Europe. A considerable amount of Norse literature appeared in Iceland during the 11th to14th century Ce and the best -known works are the Eddas and the Sagas. 9) The North American stories, folktales and folklores encompass the Inuit of the Artic north down to the Navajo in the deserts of the southern United States, and the vast expanse and diversity of cultures between the two coasts. 10) Polynesia consists of hundreds of small islands throughout the Pacific. In Polynesian culture all things on Earth, whether rocks or people, are believed to be descended from the gods. Nevertheless, I have to end my short tales of all the ten mythologies as requested by you. For details about other mythologies …….. just ‘ Bing ‘ or ‘ Goggle ‘ the required words.
