Certainly for artistic merit the correct typography-font and style/colour [color] will be significant and important.
Edit: Ben above knows exactly what he’s talking about and I do not.
For example If I was to create a poster promoting Christianity it wouldn’t be suitable to put a pagan symbol on the poster -that would be an example of unsuitable imagery.
A little less obviously if I was required by law to put on the poster the words “there are other religions available”. I might choose to place the quite I have to include in small text to make it more discreet.
Colour should be seen as the brighter the more difficult it is to read from a longer distance. Black, Blue, Green and darker colours are regarded as professional colours.

Modern Graphic design is very much based on simplicity. Anything too fancy just doesn’t work. If you go to Serif’s webpage and look at their pageplus or web design plus tutorials you will get a basic understanding of how these things should be done and how your yearbook compares.
