“Trauma of self-transformation” indicates that both the immigrant and the exile must face life changes in location, culture, perhaps language, etc. The immigrant knows that there will be these challenges but willingly faces them for an opportunity at a better life. The exile is forced to leave home and is therefore reluctantly cast into a situation where these obstacles must be overcome. In other words, the immigrant has a positive attitude because the change is by choice while the exile has the added burden of being forced to make the change.

The immigrant to a new country must learn the language and customs of the new country. So they must conform to the new country’s culture. Therefore they will transform themselves to fit in with the new people. Possibly by dressing differently, speaking differently, eating different food and using alternate transportation that what they are used to. They must also learn the laws of the new land.

An immigrant chooses to go to a new place. An Exile doesn’t; they were forced to leave the OLD place. However moving always means that you change and change is painful.

By choosing to move, the immigrant chooses to change. By not having chosen to move, the exile is being forced to change against their will and tries to avoid it.

You cannot uproot and leave your home and be okay. The experience makes you a different person. Transforms who you are.
