algebra problems that you could walk me through?
x + y = 2
y = -2x + 1
and another problem .
what is the slope of a line parallel to the line y = 3/4x – 5
??
thanx.
muchoo love(;
Favorite Answer
x + (-2x + 1) = 2
-x + 1 = 2
-x = 1
x = -1
to check that this is right, we now have:
(-1) + y = 2 -> y = 3
and
y = -2(-1) + 1 -> y = 2 + 1 -> y = 3
since they both come out as 3, we know x = -1 is correct.
For the second problem:
y = 3/4x – 5. The slope of this line is 3/4 (whatever x is being multiplied by is the slope). Any line parallel to this would have to have the exact same slope, otherwise it would eventually intersect (parallel means they never intersect, or cross). To see that this is true, you can graph it on graph paper, you’d start at y = -5, x = 0 and then plot another point at y = -2 (the 3 in 3/4 means its increasing 3 from the original point) and x = 4 (the 4 in 3/4 means its increasing 4 from the original point). Then draw a straight line that goes through both of your 2 points. Any line that isn’t going over 4 and up 3 no matter how far away you put it to begin with on the y-axis will eventually cross your original line.
As far as the parallel line the slope stays the same while the y intercept changes, did they give you the parallel y intercept?
Make sure rewrite in the form y=mx+b
x=2-(-2x+1) distribute the (-)sign
x=2+2x-1 add like terms
3x= -1 divide by 3
x= -1/3
2nd, parallel slope is the same slope as the original line 3/4
y+2x=-2x+1+2x
y+2x=1
y/2+2x/2=1/2
y/2+x=1/2
wait, thats not it
y=-2x+1
y-1=-2x
lets put some numbers in…
x+y=2
x+y-y=2-y
x=2-y
if y=3, then x=-1
-1+3=2
that works but,
3=(-2 x -1)+1
-2 x -1=2
2+1=3
not right
I’m stumped, sorry
