Algebra help! im confused.. and not very smart at this.. help?

you have to solve the equation for y. then find the value of y for the given value of x. there are two answers.

these were the only ones i got stuck on. if you could please just walk through each one with me that would be great! i want to know how to do this better. thanks so much!

xy-3x=40; x=5

7x-xy= -18; x= -4

3xy-28=16x; x=4

9y+6xy=30; x= -6

4 – 2xy=15; x= -1

4x+7y+5xy=0; x=1

xy-3x=40; x=5

Put the value of x into the equation

5y-3(5)=40

Multiply the -3 and 5 to get -15

5y-15=40

Add the 15 to the 40

5y=55

Divide by 5

y=11

Now put the value of y (11) back into the equation and solve.

11x-3x=40

Subtract the 3x from 11x

8x=40

Divide by 8

x=40

Try to figure out the rest! Good Luck 🙂

I am a Pre-algebra teacher and have some idea about solving equations.

On the first one you need to put in 5 for all the places that an x occurs.

So 5(y) – 3(5)=40

5y – 15 = 40

+15 +15

5y = 55

divide by 5 both sides

y = 11

what you want to do is put in the value for x to each problem…if you can simplify by multiplying do so first. then take the number that is on the same side of the letter, do the opposite of what is there.

so another one is: 7x-xy = -18

7(-4) – (-4)y = -18

-28 – (-4y) = -18

+ 28 + 28

4y = 10

divide by 4 both sides

y = 10/4

xy-3x=40; x=5

5y-3*5=40

5y=40 +3*5

y=(40+3*5)/5

(plug into calculator or follow order of operations by hand)

7x-xy= -18; x= -4

7*-4 – (-4*y) = -18

4*y = -18 – (-4*7) (remember 2 negatives make a positive)

y = (-18 + (4*7)) / 4

(plug into calculator or follow order of operations by hand)

3xy-28=16x; x=4

(3*4)*y-28=16*4

(3*4)*y=16*4+28

y=(16*4+28)/(3*4)

(plug into calculator or follow order of operations by hand)

9y+6xy=30; x= -6

9y+6*(-6)*y=30

y(9+6*-6)=30

y=30/(9+6*-6)

(plug into calculator or follow order of operations by hand)

4 – 2xy=15; x= -1

4 – (2*-1*y)=15

2*1*y=15-4 (remember 2 negatives make a positive)

y=(15-4)/(2*1)

(plug into calculator or follow order of operations by hand)

4x+7y+5xy=0; x=1 (this is easy, x=1)

4*1 + 7*y + 5*1*y=0

4+7y+5y=0

7y+5y=-4

12y=-4

y=-4/12

Every time the first step I am simply plugging in for x.

5(y)-3(5)=40

5y-15=40

divide by 5 you will get

y=11

the above answe is for the first problem

the point is you have given the value of x put x values on each x sign to get y values. googd luck if i had more time i would solv all of them fo you.

xy-3x=40; x=5

(5)y-3(5)=40

5y-15=40

5y=40+15

5y=55

y=11

Here’s the first one now I am off to bed….ZZZZZZZZZ
