Follow two simple rules:

1) What ever you do to one side of the equation do the same to the other side to ensure its nature doesn’t change

2) Get the variable onto one side

So for this question:

5x + -7 = 4x +3

5x – 7 = 4x + 3 (plus -7 is equivalent to -7)

5x – 7 + 7 = 4x + 3 + 7 (added 7 to both sides to remove the -7)

5x = 4x + 10 (result of adding the 7)

5x – 4x = 4x + 10 – 4x (subtract 4x from both sides to get variable onto one side)

x = 10 (result of subtracting 4x and the final result)

Hope this helps explain the steps and you can use it in the future. If you don’t understand any of the steps let me know and I will try to clarify.

Good luck

It’s no different than any other problem.

5x + -7 = 4x + 3

Start by moving 4x to the left side. Subtract 4x from each side and you are left with:

x + -7 = 3

Then, move the -7 to the right side. Add 7 to both sides.

x = 10

When doing this sort of equation, just determine whether the left or right side will have the variable. Then move the variables to one side, and the numbers to the other. You’ll be left with a normal equation that you can solve.

In any equation, you have to do the same thing to both sides. If you subtract a number from one side, you have to subtract the same amount from the other side. Same with addition, multiplication, and division. Let’s walk through this problem, and you’ll see what I mean.

5x + -7 = 4x + 3

1. Subtract 4x from both sides.

5x + -7 = 4x + 3

-4x -4x

1x + -7 = 3

Since a positive (+) and a negative (-7) is a negative, you

2. Add 7 to both sides.

1x (or just x)

x -7 = 3

+7 +7

x = 10

It’s as simple as that! Hope it helps!!

manipulate the equation until you get x = a number. Whatever you do to one side, you have to do to the other. So subtract 4x from each side so you get the X on one side. x – 7 = 3 Now add 7 to both sides, which cancels out the -7 on the left side, and you’re left with x=10. To check your work, plug 10 in for x in the original equation. 5(10) – 7 = 4(10) + 3 43 = 43 check!

subtract 4x from both sides

5x – 7 – 4x = 4x + 3 – 4x

x – 7 = 3

add 7 to both sides’

x – 7 + 7 = 3 + 7

x = 10

you have to gather like terms of the same side of the equal sign
