Accounting Homework Problem?

I have a tough problem on my homework for Intermediate Accounting. I am on the Statement of Cash Flows Chapter. The problem wants me to prepare a schedule of net cash provided by (used in) operating activities for the year using the direct method.

I get a summary of revenues and expenses and then a list of net changes in working capital accounts. The problem I’m having is in the book it says to take Beginning Accounts Receivable + Sales = Cash available for collection. It then says to subtract ending Accounts Receivable to = Cash collected by customers. In the information the problem gives me there is no beginning and ending AR, just one number.

What should I do or look for? I thought I would need balance sheet and income statement data to figure this out but none is given.(no end of year or beginning of year balances). Any help would be amazing!! Thanks in advance.

The problem is giving you the net changes so you don’t need an ending or beginning balance.

If beginning balance in A/R is $3000 and ending balance is $5000, there was a net change of $2000. For A/R, this means that $2000 should be subtracted in the operations section because revenue went up but no cash was actually collected.

So if beginning A/R was $5000 and ending was $3000, it means there was a net change of ($2000).
