8th Grade Algebra?

Can anyone explain how to simplify this in steps?

4 – 5x + 6x + 7

I can do 5x plus 6x, but I’m stumped with the 4 – and + 7. Do I add 7 to 4? Do I subtract 7 from 4? Our teacher said something about how the subtraction sign was really a negative, but I still don’t get it.

Help is appreciated. Thanks in advance =P

You add the 4 and 7, but note that it is – 5x. You are subtracting 5x. So -5x + 6x = x, and the overall result is 11 – x

Ok well you must group them… anything with a ‘x’ at the end put a square over, anything else a circle… Add or subtract the squared groups and then add or subtract the circle groups… you can use any shape but this way helps me a lot… Ok now

4-5x+6x+7

(4+7)-5x+6x

(11) +1x

You must add (or subtract) the numbers without variables first, also you must make sure you are adding the negative and positive numbers the right way… the way I remember is to keep the sign of the larger number… Heres an example how to use the positive and negative numbers together…

Example:

12-14

12-14

-2

heres another one…

-20-13

for this one, you must add the two numbers…

so the answer is -33…

Ok heres a rule to remember… if theres and negative and a negative (-20 -13) then you must add them and keep the negative sign…

If theres a negative and positive keep the sign of the larger number…

Also make sure that you don’t add the variables (the ‘x’s) with the plain numbers…

So the total answer is 11+1x

OR

11+x

Also another thing, sometimes you will notice people just put a 1 in front of x… that is because x and 1 mean the same thing, but you can’t just put 1 because x can mean any number… some of the other answers are wrong though, you can’t find the variable x without a equal sign…

You have to block off each value separately. Instead of looking at the statement as 4-5X+6X+7, see it as you are combining the numbers positive 4, negative 5X, positive 6X, and positive 7. Combine the numbers with variables (-5X and 6X) which will give you 1X or just X. Then combine the values without variables (4+7) which is 11. Then put your two answers together in a statement. Since they are both positive your statement will look like this:

11+X

You can simplify this no further. Good luck!

Actually, you’d subtract 5x from 6x, if you read it carefully. The – goes with the 5x, not with the 4–the sign goes with whatever the number right after the sign is. So 6x-5x (or 6x + -5x, as your teacher told you) = 1x (or just x), and then you’d just add 4 + 7 to get 11. The sum of the two added together would then be x + 11.

+4 -5x + 6x +7 =

Rewrite the equation

+4 + 7 + 6x -5x =

11 + 1x =

The sign in front of the number is letting you know if the number is positive or negative. If the number does not have a sign in front of it, it is called an unassigned number and is understood to be positive.

4 -5x +6x +7x=?

-5x+6x+4+7=

x+11=

x= -11

what you would do is subtract teh 5x from 6x because its actually -5x, then you would add the 4 and 7. you would then get x +11 =? you then subract 11 from both sides to get a final solution of x = -11!

This is right trust me!! I’m in college!!

add the 4 to the 7 because the 4 isnt negative…the 4- 5x means negative 5xso it -5x +6x= x and 4+7 =11

so the answer: 11+x

You have two types of numbers here in one group you have

-5x and 6x

the other is

4 and 7

so you add the two likes together

-5x+6x= x

4+7=11

and because the 11 is a positive number you end with x+11

One way I was taught (back in dinosaur days) is to change the symbols to make it easier to understand

4-5x+6x+7 becomes

4+(-5x) +6x +7

11+x

Or, change the order:

4+7+6x-5x, then do the math.

same answer as above.

5x is the only negative in your equation. They word it that way to throw you off a little. By using paras, and changing symbols, you can see it a little more clearly. Hope this helped.

4 – 5x + 6x + 7=0

-5x+6x=x

4+7=11

x+11=0

x=-11

check the work

4-(5*-11) + (6*-11)+7=0

4-(-55)+-66+7=0

4+55-66+7

59-66+7

-7+7=0
