8th Grade Algebra?
4 – 5x + 6x + 7
I can do 5x plus 6x, but I’m stumped with the 4 – and + 7. Do I add 7 to 4? Do I subtract 7 from 4? Our teacher said something about how the subtraction sign was really a negative, but I still don’t get it.
Help is appreciated. Thanks in advance =P

4-5x+6x+7
(4+7)-5x+6x
(11) +1x
You must add (or subtract) the numbers without variables first, also you must make sure you are adding the negative and positive numbers the right way… the way I remember is to keep the sign of the larger number… Heres an example how to use the positive and negative numbers together…
Example:
12-14
12-14
-2
heres another one…
-20-13
for this one, you must add the two numbers…
so the answer is -33…
Ok heres a rule to remember… if theres and negative and a negative (-20 -13) then you must add them and keep the negative sign…
If theres a negative and positive keep the sign of the larger number…
Also make sure that you don’t add the variables (the ‘x’s) with the plain numbers…
So the total answer is 11+1x
OR
11+x
Also another thing, sometimes you will notice people just put a 1 in front of x… that is because x and 1 mean the same thing, but you can’t just put 1 because x can mean any number… some of the other answers are wrong though, you can’t find the variable x without a equal sign…
11+X
You can simplify this no further. Good luck!
Rewrite the equation
+4 + 7 + 6x -5x =
11 + 1x =
The sign in front of the number is letting you know if the number is positive or negative. If the number does not have a sign in front of it, it is called an unassigned number and is understood to be positive.
-5x+6x+4+7=
x+11=
x= -11
what you would do is subtract teh 5x from 6x because its actually -5x, then you would add the 4 and 7. you would then get x +11 =? you then subract 11 from both sides to get a final solution of x = -11!
This is right trust me!! I’m in college!!
so the answer: 11+x
-5x and 6x
the other is
4 and 7
so you add the two likes together
-5x+6x= x
4+7=11
and because the 11 is a positive number you end with x+11
4-5x+6x+7 becomes
4+(-5x) +6x +7
11+x
Or, change the order:
4+7+6x-5x, then do the math.
same answer as above.
5x is the only negative in your equation. They word it that way to throw you off a little. By using paras, and changing symbols, you can see it a little more clearly. Hope this helped.
-5x+6x=x
4+7=11
x+11=0
x=-11
check the work
4-(5*-11) + (6*-11)+7=0
4-(-55)+-66+7=0
4+55-66+7
59-66+7
-7+7=0
