(c). John bought three times as many stamps as Gwen. After he used 2 of them, he had 16 left. How many stamps did Gwen buy?

Checking (a):

Equation: 3x – 2 = 16

(3 x 2) – 2 = 16

6 – 2 = 16

4 = 16

[The answer doesn’t match, so (a) is eliminated]

Checking (b):

Equation: 3x – 2 = 16

(3 x 16) – 2 = 16

48 – 2 = 16

46 = 16

[The answer doesn’t match, so (b) is eliminated]

Checking (c):

Equation: 3x – 2 = 16

(3 x 6) – 2 = 16

18 – 2 =16

16 = 16

[The answer matches, so therefore (c) could be it]

option (d) doesn’t give us enough information to check with the equation … so (d) is elminated.

Therefore, you are correct. (c) is the answer!
