Unschooling in Iowa?

Does anyone know of any homeschool support groups that ARE NOT religiously based, focus on unschooling, and are in Iowa? If not, does anyone here unschool in Iowa? I’ve been thinking of starting my own unschool group, actually, and how would I go about doing that?

Please Help! The closest thing to a homeschool support group we have found is where you go to register and stuff, and it’s completely run by the public schools, and we would like to get away from that.

A quick search brought me to this link. Not knowing where in Iowa you are makes it kind of hard, but check it out. I do see some inclusive/secular groups listed.

edit #2: I started up an inclusive support group a few years back because there was only one other group, and it was Christian only. To get it off the ground, I sent an add to a local public access channel, to the local papers’ classifieds, and the library bulletin board. You can also set up something like a yahoo group so that people who may not read the paper of peruse the local bulletin boards can still find you.

You might join yahoo group Unschooling Basics, as well as the groups mentioned in the first post. Once there you can see if there are any local groups.

I live in Oklahoma, my friend just started a really great unschooling group because the only other was was very Christian in focus to the point of exclusion, and even though we are Christians, we weren’t comfortable with that. After just a few short months, it is the best group! We meet often and have lots of fun.

All I can tell you is what I used and learned.

Creative writing. That involves research, ideas, writing out papers on topics, annotating them. Following a style sometimes like APA or CHICAGO.

Sometimes with the goal of getting published, which doen’t require annotations, just citations in the text body.

Getting an electronics kit from Edmunds Scientific or Radio Shack and learning to make electornics things.

Getting a Telescope from Edmunds or other places and a star chart and going out at nights.

Computer programming. I found this totally enjoyble and it teaches you math, logic and even composition and grammar for you have to get it right or it won’t work.

Get a copy of Visual BASIC 4 or 6

Learn to program

Learn to make YOUR OWN PROGRAMS with NO Tutorial

Just come up with an idea and LEARN how to use the KEYWORDS TO MAKE IT

It teachs Alegbra, Geometry and Trig
