My niece will be attending a new school this year. She will be in 7th grade. Any tips for her?

I want her to be confident and feel good.

I disagree with the recommendations on being out-going and making lots of friends. Everybody is different: some people are out-going (extraverts) and others aren’t (introverts). There is nothing wrong with being introverted, nothing wrong with only making one good friend. People seem to think it’s better if you be outgoing and have a lot of friends, as though there’s something wrong with you if you aren’t like that, but it’s just not true!

To feel confident, you have to believe that nobody’s better than you, no matter how they might look at you. Confidence is about having a good sense of self. She just needs to really understand that they are all in the same place she’s at–trying to figure out their place, none of them perfect, not really having a clue but trying to pretend that they do–and to understand that mistakes, even social ones, are all a part of the learning process.

Have her see it as an adventure and a learning experience and she’ll be fine.

Be herself, think for herself, and do not follow the crowd just to belong.

Some advice for the mom, and dad, be there, support her, listen closely, and never dismiss her concerns about any school issues no matter how minute they may seem..

Make a lot of friends and tell her to pursue her passion and not what other people want her to do.

Let her be outgoing. Let her make some new friends, do not let her feel shy.
