How can I learn to write better in cursive? ( I know I spelt that wrong).?

My cursive sucks. I can barely read it and that is pathetic. I do my school on the computer so I don’t have to do very much writing…when I do I do it in print so I can read it. I am 14 by the way. So does anybody know of any exersices I can do? Thanks.

A few practice drills for cursive writing might include writing a row of continuous lower case “e” and a row of linked lower case “l” for example, trying to make the slant and size uniform. (If you are right handed, slant the top of your paper slightly down to the left) Or, a row of lower case “o” that looks like a slinky or tunnel. Group similar letters together when you practice such as “a,c,d,g,o” or “m,n,u,v, w”. If you are writing the letters correctly, you should be able to write the entire lower case letters together [a-z] without taking your pencil off the paper (unless you run out of room) and then dot the i,j and cross the t. All lower case letters individually begin on the base line. Letters need to touch the top or mid line, so be in control of your pencil and aim to make your cursive letters use the lines.

By the way, cursive is not the word that is “spelled” incorrectly – lol. It is good that you are taking an interest in your penmanship. Right or wrong, good pennmanship often reflects a certain impression of you to others.

In California, public school teachers don’t make up their own curriculum. They have to follow California State Standards. This is a list of learning objectives that must be accomplished or mastered by all students in their perspective grade levels. For example, your child’s fourth grade teacher is merely letting your child know that she is not in compliance. That’s all. There is no need to be defensive about the teacher’s comments. In fact, handwriting is actually taught in THIRD grade. Here’s a tip for you. Go see your child’s teacher and ask to see some of her writing samples. If your child is clearly unable to write legibly in handwriting then ask for supplemental materials or even tutoring that would help your child advance. Most children do not write in handwriting not because they don’t want to but because they don’t know how to form the cursive letters. Give your child the extra assistance to pick up the skills she missed in 3rd grade and you’ll see significant changes. Keep in mind that your child’s teacher does not take things personally, it is just business. Teachers are in the business of helping kids obtain an education. The question always seem to be…but do they want it?

Here are some sites that you can print out practice worksheets from. There is one that lets you make up some of your own sentences on their site and print them out for practice. You really do need to go back to the basics. Find one of these sites that you are most adept at and practice their worksheets daily (even if you only do one a day it will help). You do need to use the tracer pages, they will help you develop the correct muscle memory that your hand needs to correctly do the lettering without backsliding into a sloppy handwriting.

I know of one – dont bother. Nobody can read someone else’s joined up writing, it’s just a pain which should be discouraged at school level.

When you really need to, please carry on printing, at least then others will have a fighting chance of reading it.

PS

Dont put yourself down- you spelt cursive correctly!

You can get something simple as handwriting without tears.

It is used in the younger years, but can help anyone who needs additional practice.

Another option would be to focus on printing well, not everyone masters cursive, nor is this necessary.

But if this is important to you, keep practicing it will improve in time.

You can get a really cheap book designed for second-graders. I have the same problem and I’m 51 — it’s what I use. If it makes you feel any better, poor handwriting is supposed to be a mark of intelligence! ;-}

Good luck!

Practice. Stop using the computer, pay attention to your letter formation, and practice. Also slow down a little as you pay attention to your letter formation, later you can speed up a little.
