One thing you’ll find with homeschooling is that you finally get to LIVE. The 7th graders I’ve known who have homeschooled have usually only done their academic work in the mornings. That has left the afternoons for all kinds of things: field trips, general activities with homeschoolers, spending time outside, time in lessons, volunteering, pursuing personal interests and hobbies, sports…

It can be kind of unsettling at first, having this free time and not knowing what to do with it. The best thing would be to just consistently seek out things to learn about or to do, until you find something you really, really enjoy. You could definitely work part-time, if you wanted.

1. From 9:00-2:00

2. I did have a summer job teaching little kids in karate. I now have a part-time job in my father’s book business.

3. I read books on history and cultures…make geographical maps of ancient cities/battles. Sometimes I play Rome Total War for a more realistic history lesson.:) Research different languages and how they sound. Learn the Lord’s Prayer in Old English. If I’m really bored, I do extra schoolwork, therefore working against me since I’ll have nothing really to do with the extra summer break. Karate has been a sport I’ve been participating in. I have a green belt. Now my hobby is the Chinese language.

3. I’m a nerd. WATCH SOME STAR TREK! Live long and prosper.

Homeschooling is what you make it. I have been homeschooled all my life (I am now a senior) and to tell the truth I am never at home. I work on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, take two classes at a nearby college on Tuesday and Thurday, tutor kids on Friday afternoon and volunteer at a local elementary school on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. All this allong with sports, church activities, parties and other organizations keeps me pretty busy. In seventh grade your school work should be your 1st priority ( I know this sounds boring but stay with me) In seventh grade I spent an average of 6 hours a day on school ( including homework and projects). Comparing that to a public school kid’s work this sounds trivial. With your extra time I would suggest you find one or two activites that you’re really interested in and involves kids your own age. Also get involved in volunteer work and make a difference in your community through leadership.

Community service is fun and once you get into highschool it will look great on your transcript. Check for any homeschool organizations in your area. This is a great place to meet other homeschoolers your own age and do all sorts of fun activities. There is absolutely no reason for to be bored. Good Luck!!!

P.S. I wouldn’t suggest getting a job until you’re in highschool. It puts alot of stress on your schedule and in most states you can’t work more than a few hours at a time until you are 16 so it is hardly worth it.

Maybe your parents can enroll you in a homeschool co-op. Classes in the community, church, etc. may also be available. If you want to learn to play an instrument you can take music classes. Now is the time to find something that you are passionate about and pursue it, i.e., music, art, sports, etc.

How much time you would have available depends upon what type of homeschool curriculum you and using and how long it takes you to get your school work done each day.

I’m not homeschooled but I have a friend who is.

Don’t be so worried. Still do the same things you do when you went to a regular school. You can still hangout with your friends after school, and everything. If you like sports then sign up for soccer or some kind of sport. If you like dance sign up for that. If you want to get a job, see if any of your friends are signing up for a certin job and sign up with them so it won’t be so boring. I hope this helps. . . and don’t worry you’ll be fine.

You’ll have heaps of time, if you simply do your stuff, get on with it and you’ve got several hours spare compared to regular school because they do so-o-o much fill in stuff that’s non educational, you’ll be able to work part time as well as take on hobbies,,.. if you don’t have a hobby, I think you should come up with a few,, do some soul searching and discover where your talents lie and what you enjoy doing and go out and do it, or find our info on how you can begin, every little tiny step counts, baby steps can build you an exciting life of never ever being bored! There’s a lot of benefits and setbacks with homeschooling. But homeschooling shouldn’t be boring. Maybe do some extracurricular activities. My nephew, he joined a soccer team, a robotics team, a badminton club, and does filmmaking, and he may take music lessons again.

My kids follow their passions. They might work on the computer, surfing the net or programming, photoshopping, etc. Some play music and practice their instruments, others practice sports that they are in. The girls are teaching themselves to knit, and one also paints with acrylic. The boys are smaller but spend time on model building. We go on day trips quite often (twice a week or so) and that’s considered, as is our volunteer time, housework, maintenance, etc. They all help with that.

The great thing about spare time is that it allows you to find your passion, find what you are interested in and explore it as far as you want. Then feel free to continue or to drop it and find something else. Start off by revisiting what you loved when you were younger and rediscover who you are! Good luck!

Get involved in a youth group/church.

Sign up for a sport.

Volunteer.

Work should wait until high school.
