Penn Foster has Medical Transcription as a course. They even help you find a job after you complete the course.

If you are already transcription literate and just need medical courses, my thoughts would be that you could take a medical terminology course from the local college in your area. Even better, just start sending out your resume by fax or in person to local doctor offices in your area and tell them that as you are getting started you are offering a deal that goes along with your inexperience. I think you could probably get work at the same time you are taking the terminology course and expand from there.

Well, yes, you can.

I would recommend against it in your case for two reasons.

First, medical transcription as a profession is getting outsourced. If you can do the job electronically from Kansas, someone else can do it from Singapore just as conveniently–and the person in Singapore will do it cheaper. So even if you get a job like that, you’ll be paid third-world wages.

Second, online education requires that the student be very computer-savvy. You’ve posted a higher education question in the homeschooling forum; that indicates that you lack the skill to navigate websites like an expert–and you’ll probably fail at online stuff.

I’d counsel you to visit a nearby community college and ask them for career counseling. You need face-to-face help from an expert who can guide you to a better future.

I guess it depends on your area. I have a friend that works successfully at home in this field and she said most places in our area will only hire someone to work at home after they have proven themselves on the job first.

But I’m sure not all places are like that.

The smartest thing to do is to find some schools, like the one mentioned, and then call some hospitals and dr. offices that hire transcriptionists and ask some questions before committing to enrolling. That way if you find 4 out of 5 hospitals say “we do not hire at home transcriptionist with under five years of on the job experience, then at least you will know what you are up against.

M-TEC http://www.mtecinc.com/ is supposed to be a highly recognized school in the field. They also have an excellent placement rate for employment after training.

A woman told me about this school in one of the Y! groups I’m in. She said that a job interviewer actually told her that they prefer to hire M-TEC graduates because they’re trained so thoroughly. She works at home as a medical transcriptionist. Hope this helps!
