student loan with bad credit?

I want to start college in the spring of 08, but im worried about paying for it. Will it be hard for me to get a student loan with my horrible credit? If my husband ( who has perfect credit) co-signs will they give it to me still even tho my credit is very bad?

It will only be about $7,000 for 2 years at a comm college…?

Also, are most student loans the kind where you have until 6 months after graduating to start paying it back?? Thanks !

Even if you have bad credit or not credit at all you can still get your own student loan. You can get a private loan with your husband because he has good credit, but you should definitely take out a loan on your own.

Here are the steps you need to take:

1) Fill out the FAFSA. This will determine if you are eligible for financial aid. Go here:

http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

2) Once you are eligible for aid, choose a government-based student loan. The best loan to get is a Federal Perkins Loan. These have low interest rates and the government will help you pay it back as long as you stay enrolled in school. You also don’t need a cosigner or good credit for it. For more info go here:

3) The next best loan to get is a Subsidized Stafford Loan. This has many of the same benefits as a Perkins Loan. Learn more here:

4) You can also try to get a grant or scholarship, which is free money that you won’t have to pay back. Look here:

Most student loans don’t have to be paid back until 6 months after you graduate. And if you get more than one you can consolidate them together to have a lower payment. You can read about consolidation here:

Good luck!

Apply for federal student aid through the financial aid office at your school. They will give those to anyone. Those are the kind you have to pay back six months after you graduate but you can always defer them if you can prove financial hardship. They are also low interest. Stay away from private loans, they are much more rigid in their payback schedule and they are more likely to effect your credit score. For community college, federal loans should be all you need. Try not to take out more than you need, that will help keep costs down.

You have to apply for a the stafford loans, to be eligible, go to federal stafford loans, and fill out the online application. You can take out a Federal Pell Grant, and Also a Federal subsidized Stafford loan, and a Federal unsubsidized Stafford loan, no matter your credit rating and you don’t have to have a co-signer, you just have to complete your FAFSA, you can do that on line, or through your colleges, financail aid office.

If you get a Stafford loan, there will be no need for your husband to co-sign. Your credit should not be an issue (unless you have previously defaulted on a Stafford loan). More information regarding loans and loan limits can be found at www.finaid.org/loans.

In addition you should talk to a financial aid officer at your school for more information/guidance. Good luck!

It is better for students to apply for a student credit card, as it helps them in building their credit history that will help them in getting loans easily later on. Many international students experience difficulties in getting a credit card due to absence of credit card history. To help them build a credit card history they should hold a credit card or at least show regularity in repaying any type of debts. It is an annoying situation, especially if you are in desperate need of money. Most international students who apply for a credit card are usually turned down.
