parents possibly abused PLUS loans? please help.?

My parents helped me get through college my taking out student loans in my name and PLUS loans in their name. Even though they claim that 100% went to me, I am curious why they are asking me to pay them $400 per month when my own direct loans are only coming out to $150/mo. It took me 5 years to graduate from college and my dad said the PLUS balance came out to $60,000. This blew my mind becase my loan is only about $25,000 grand. I think they might have blew the money on something else. I do respect my parents, but paying them this much per month would KILL my wife and I financially even with my good job. What should I do? please help. this whole idea drives a wedge between my marriage.

Did you and your parents discuss loan repayment when they decided to take out PLUS loans for you? PLUS loans are not limited like students loans. PLUS loans are processed through your school’s financial aid office, and the funds are sent directly to the school. You can request a copy of your student account from the school to see the amounts that were deposited. Did you receive refund checks while you were in college? Did you use financial aid funds to pay for books, dorm fees, etc? If you did, that was probably coming from the PLUS loan. As for repayment, I think that is something you should have discussed years ago so there would be no surprises now. PLUS loans have higher interest rates than your student loan. Their payment is higher because of the interest. Talk to your parents. Ask your parents to call the lender to see what options are available for changing the payment term to lower the payment, if necessary. Good luck…I hope it works out!

Uh, HELLO – college is expensive. Your own loans probably didn’t even cover 20 or 30% of your education – mine didn’t.

How dare you insult your parents.

If you don’t trust them, call your university and ask them to give you a statement of all monies paid to them through your education.

85k for FIVE years isn’t that bad. Just pay it – you got the education, why should your parents fork over the cash when they were just trying to do you a favor?

Audit them. Ask them to show you the loans. If they took them out in their name, then it is not legally your responsibility. Tell them that you want to see the loan paper and their documentation of payment to you. If they can’t prove it, call them on it. My mother would NEVER do that to me. Your parents suck.
