You can still receive student loans with bad credit. The only thing that will keep you from getting federal loans, ( Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loans or Perkins Loans) would be if you every defaulted on a Federal Government loans and never cleared the default, if you have been convicted of possessing or selling drugs WHILE receiving federal aid, or if you are at the aggregate loan limits ( which means you have received all the federal loans hat you can receive in a lifetime) You will ha e to contact the Department of Education for a determinations on if when you will be eligible after a drug conviction. They will send you a worksheet that you will send back to them.

If you are referring the Alternative Education loans, they are credit based. If you have “ bad credit” or a lack of credit, they would require you to get a cosigner on your loan. Those loans typically do not need to be paid back until after you graduate but interest will acre at time of disbursement ( when they send the money to the school).

For stafford loans it doesn’t matter what type of credit you have, but there is a limit to how much you can borrow and it is based on your need. If your looking for supplemental student loans above and beyond stafford and perkins loans you will need some credit to qualify for them.

Heck if you have the worst credit you can still get a loan…but did you ask the right question? can I get a cheap loan? one which doesn;’t carry a large interest rate?

You will possibly have to have a co-signer on the loan. Be careful and only borrow the amount you need b/c it’s a pain in the butt to pay it back.
