Funding for Pepperdine University? How can I afford this school with a part time job and 2 younger siblings ?

I currently attend the University of Pittsburgh, however, I have wanted to attend Pepperdine University in Malibu for some time now. Unfortunately I never applied, simply due to the fact that I cannot afford the school. At $34,580 per year plus $9,930 for room and board, it will be impossible for me to afford Pepperdine.

I am currently employed at two jobs and have applied for scholarships and financial assistance many times in the past. Unfortunately all I have been able to receive is a very small loan due to my father’s income. The problem is, my younger brother and sister need money for college as well. This is my number one reason why I do not dare ask my parents to put forth this incredible expense for me.

I enjoy my current university, however, after researching both schools, I believe that Pepperdine will provide me with the job placement I need and the education I truly want. Any ideas on how I can afford my goal? All suggestions are greatly appreciated!

First of all, if you have two siblings in college as well, make sure this is reflected on your federal financial aid application. (FAFSA) Sometimes this makes a big difference in your award amounts. The question is “Number of family members in college?” or something similar.

Okay second, you should apply to the school and then add Pepperdine to your fafsa application and have them issue you an award letter. Some very expensive schools offer VERY awesome financial aid packages IF you apply early enough. I seriously doubt you’ll get in free, but your loan amounts may be higher. You might even mention the fact that you’ve got 2 siblings in college as well. Sometimes this takes time to set up, so you might consider transferring in next fall 08. (I just noticed this school has a Feb 15th priority deadline for the fall 08 year anyway…. so not likely spring semester is a possibility.)

Scholarship searches are great, but focus your attention on scholarships from that particular school and major field of study. Looks like those deadlines are March for fall 08.

Anyway, it’s not impossible for you to attend this school, but you will likely accumulate a great deal of debt to do it. And PLEASE don’t ask your parents to borrow if you are unwilling yourself. Maybe a, “I’ll borrow 80% if you borrow 20%” approach would work? Just ask yourself if the school is worth it and keep these two things in mind.

As a general rule, you don’t want your total college debt to be more than your first years salary after graduating. Payments on those student loans are about 10%. In other words, if you borrow a grand total of $60,000 to go to school, your payments would be about 600 dollars. Any you should be able to get a job in your major field of study earning 60 grand upon graduation.
